How does New Game++ work?
New Game++ lets you play an unlimited number of New Game+ runs. Before 1.4.0, New Game+ only let you beat the game one more time. Your original run and your NG+ runs use separate save folders, loaded from the main menu, which now has 7 save slots instead of 5.
According to Remedy’s May preview, New Game+ carries over Aberrant upgrades, unlocked combat abilities, Talents, Artifacts, and health and combat resource upgrades. It adds more talent nodes, lets you equip several abilities from the same Resonant boss and unlocks a fourth Artifact slot, while enemies get tougher and some Resonants behave differently.
Update 1.4.0 also tweaked rewards so maxing out every Zone in New Game+ is somewhat easier, and fixed a rare NG+ bug where the Into the Sinkhole miniboss didn’t spawn.
What else changed in update 1.4.0?
Quality of life:
- Build Power now shows at the bottom left of the Loadout screen. Remedy adds that fights get tougher when you’re below the enemy level, so side quests and exploration help.
- A HUD icon tells you when there’s something new to buy or upgrade in The Gap.
- Pinned upgrade materials show on a vendor’s map icon if that vendor sells them.
- The Unknown Zone has 10-15% less combat.
- A separate volume slider for radio dialogue, to balance speakers or headphones against the DualSense speaker.
- Assist Mode adds a Power Core Charge Duration multiplier (100-300%) and refunds one dodge and one jump after an air execution if you’re out of both.
- A Mute copyrighted music option turns off Apocalyptica’s “Upperhand” in the intro credits.
- Razer haptics support and a tutorial explaining that Rush removes status effects.
Combat and balance:
| Change | Detail |
|---|---|
| The Park | The Firebreak employee doing his job there is much stronger |
| Bosses | Hedron phase 1 arena resized; Perfect Dodge now works against most Co-Director Resonant attacks; frame drops during the Artist Resonant’s special attack fixed |
| Abilities | Astral Rebuke lasts slightly longer; Shield now benefits from the Wallet Artifact; mini bosses and heavy enemies react differently to Push |
| Talents and upgrades | Command on low-health heavies costs 1 charge with Thought Leader; Status Spread no longer spreads expired statuses; Power Drill and Executive Order upgrades fixed |
| Enemies | Leashed enemies returning to their area regenerate Falter instead of being immune to it |
| Challenges | Some SHÜM Challenge scores are easier to reach |
PC and performance:
- Optimizations aimed mainly at the minimum and recommended PC specs, plus lighting performance across all Zones and less pop-in.
- Crash fixes on all platforms, including a crash when switching ray tracing modes.
- HDR fixes for over-saturated highlights in the AgX tonemapper and for artifacts and pixelation.
- The Steam Controller, and other controllers using Steam Input, now reconnect after losing connection.
- DLSS frame generation can be used with V-Sync, and motion blur now scales with the frame generation multiplier.
- Fixes for the Frame Rate Limiter turning itself off, ultrawide layouts and audio desync.
- Console fixes for audio cutting out on Xbox Series X and video tearing on PlayStation 5.

What did the launch hotfix 1.3.3 change?
Remedy shipped 1.3.3 at launch after early feedback that enemies felt too tanky and Dylan too weak in the early hours:
- Lower base health and Falter requirements for most enemies and for the Dancer and Deserter bosses.
- Higher maximum Aberrant Strength and Ability Strength, with bigger increases the more upgrades you have.
- Permanently cheaper respeccing, more Reset Items at every vendor, and two Reset Items from The Artist instead of one.
- Clearer English text for Aberrant Strength and Build Power, with other languages to follow.
Remedy also points to Assist Mode in the Gameplay options for tuning enemy aggression, incoming damage and ability recovery, or for making the game harder.
What should you do if you’re still stuck?
Check the known issues page in Remedy’s CONTROL Resonant Help Center or the Known Issues thread on the Steam forums. AMD users can try the optional AMD drivers that Remedy says improve performance and fix several crashes.
What hasn’t been announced yet?
- The next patch: nothing has been dated after hotfix 1.4.2.
- Photo Mode: expected in November; see the post-launch plans.
- Leftover map markers: Remedy admits it probably missed a few.
